Who is Jesus?
Many people assume Jesus was a great moral teacher, philosopher or prophet. However, he repeatedly claimed to be God. This leaves us with only three possibilities. Either he was lying, or he was insane, or he was telling the truth. Jesus was and is God.
Jesus was also a real historical human being. The New Testament and several non-Christian sources confirm his existence. Most credible historians do not question the historical fact of Jesus’ life, crucifixion and his physical resurrection as claimed by eyewitnesses in the early church – many of whom were executed for this belief.
Why did he die?
Jesus’ death on the cross solves our problem with sin. Humanity is tragically broken. Sin blocks us from God and the abundant life he has for us. Sin is like a huge debt we can’t possibly repay. It’s the mortgage from hell, sucking the life out of us.
‘…God paid a ransom to save you from the empty life you inherited from your ancestors. And the ransom he paid was not mere gold or silver. He paid for you with the precious lifeblood of Christ, the sinless, spotless Lamb of God’ (1 Peter 1:18-19).
How can I believe?
God is too big to understand with our limited minds. However, he has made a way for us to know him through faith in Jesus.
There are two parts to this life-changing decision. Firstly, repent or turn away from your sin. Only sick people need a doctor. In the same way, only sinners need Jesus. ‘Anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it for eternal life’ (John 12:25).
Secondly, believe in your heart that Jesus rose from the dead. ‘If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved’ (Romans 10:9). Believing in Jesus, who conquered death, also frees from the fear of death.
‘For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.
